Book Presentation

The Ambassador of The Republic of Azerbaijan to the Hellenic Republic, H.E. Rahmam Mustafayev, the writer and columnist at KATHIMERINI newspaper, Mr. Takis Theodoropoulos, the actress Katerina Lehou and the book editor Marina Shkourova present the first ever Azerbaijani novel that is translated in Greek.


The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Greece, in collaboration with the Marianna V. Vardinoyiannis Foundation and the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, invites the Greek public to a charitable performance with traditional dances and music from Azerbaijan, on Saturday, 27 September 2014, at 21:00, at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.

The Azerbaijani state Dance Ensemble will perform, for the first time ever in Greece, accompanied by the Azerbaijani State Symphonic Orchestra named after Uzeyir Hajibeyli.


The Greek public responded positively to the invitation from the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Greece to attend the Azeri music concert and was more than compensated by the Azerbaijani State Chamber Orchestra. The Orchestra, which has received many distinctions, brought together classical music with traditional and jazz and the modern timber of the East, offering a devoutly experience to the audience, who filled very early the Alexandra Trianti Hall, at the Megaron Athens Concert Hall (06/06/2014).

A very special moment of the evening was the Syrtaki, from the traditional Azeri instrument tar, which led the audience to a rhythmical applause, under the guidance of the internationally acclaimed chief conductor, Teimur Geokchayev.

During their exit from the Alexandra Trianti Hall, the members of the audience received unique copies –of high quality print– from publications presenting the rich historical and cultural heritage of Azerbaijan and which were offered by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

The Azerbaijani Cultural Hub highlights the deep-lying common cultural ties and values between Greece and Azerbaijan as the result of the long-lasting bilateral cultural, political and diplomatic relations of the two countries. Promoting cultural diversity based on the common historical and cultural roots are an important part of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy to facilitate and promote the respect for cultural diversity.
Azerbaijan is also called Land of Fires. “Azer” where the name of the country is based, means fire. Geographically, the setting where Azerbaijan is located, is one of the most ancient sites of humankind. Today, the majority of Azerbaijani population is young people aged 20-24 years old.
Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan with 2,5 million citizens where in 2015, the First European Games will take place, with 5.000 athletes from 49 Olympic European countries.
Azerbaijan is rich in natural resources, especially in oil and gas, which can be found in 2/3 of the country. Azerbaijan is the oldest oil-producing country.
The climate of Azerbaijan supports biodiversity, giving life to 4.500 different species of flora and 15.000 species of fauna. There are 8,359 rivers within Azerbaijan, 8,188 of which are less than 25 kilometers in length.
Yanar Dag, also known as the burning mountain, is a fire which blazes continuously on a hillside in Azerbaijan, continuously supported by the natural gas which endlessly feeds the fire from the ground.
The great chess player and ex World Champion Garry Kasparov was born in today’s capital of Azerbaijan, Baku.
Neft Daşları is a full town on the sea, the first oil platform in Azerbaijan and the first operating offshore oil platform in the world.
The Azerbaijani Music develops during the centuries, starting 3million years ago. The most popular musical genres in Azerbaijan are folk music, classical, jazz and above all, mugam. Mugam is a traditional music form that weds classical poetry and musical improvisation in specific local modes and in 2003 UNESCO announced it as a “Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”.
The Heydar Aliyev Foundation has been established on the grounds of the nation’s wish to express its esteem for the memory of Heydar Aliyev, who entered the history as a builder of an independent state, and the necessity of reflecting his rich moral heritage, underlining the importance for the country of the philosophy of Azerbaijanism. Starting its activity since 2004, the Foundation implements various projects in spheres such as education, public health, culture, sports, science and technology, environment, and social and other spheres. First Lady of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva is the President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
1st European Games - BAKU 2015
The First European Games will take place in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan in 2015, and every four years thereafter. 19 sports have so far been confirmed officially for the 2015 Games, with discussions ongoing for athletics. The Organizing Committee responsible for the inaugural European Games in Baku is chaired by the First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, member of the Executive Committee of the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
